Standard ukulele tuning: G C E A
Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use the same tuning. The G string is tuned higher than the C, which is called re-entrant tuning. It gives the ukulele its bright, close-voiced sound.
| String | Note | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| G | G4 | 392.00 Hz |
| C | C4 | 261.63 Hz |
| E | E4 | 329.63 Hz |
| A | A4 | 440.00 Hz |
A popular way to remember it: Good Cats Eat Alfalfa. Or sing "My Dog Has Fleas", which matches the four strings in older D tuning.

Why does my ukulele keep going out of tune?
New nylon or fluorocarbon strings stretch a lot during their first week. Tune often, and gently pull each string away from the fretboard a few times to help it settle. Temperature changes also shift the tuning, so tune every time you pick the uke up.
Frequently asked questions
What are the notes of a ukulele?
Standard tuning from the string nearest your face is G4, C4, E4, A4 (392.00, 261.63, 329.63 and 440.00 Hz).
Are soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles tuned the same?
Yes. All three use G C E A. Only the baritone ukulele uses a different tuning (D G B E).
Why is the G string higher than the C?
Standard tuning is re-entrant: the G is tuned above middle C to keep the chords close and bright. Low G tuning drops it an octave.
